Atop a twelve storey building, right at the edge of the rooftop, sat a young girl who held a curious musical instrument within her hands. She had a small button-like nose and a stubborn chin that jutted outwards. Her hair was a dark brown, so dark that if it weren't for the light of the sunset, it would appear black. The most remarkable thing about this little girl was her eyes. They were icy blue in colour and spelled out a story far more advance than her age.

The girl raised the sweet potato shaped instrument to her lips and played a tuneless song, its notes rising above the bustle of the streets below her. Atelier, for that was the name given to the child, closed her eyes and the tuneless song transitioned into a jaunty melody.

The song began to talk about growth and rebirth, of sunny days and happy nights before it changed into a haunted tune, the sudden change bringing about thoughts of creaky houses, of dripping ceilings, of cold nights and chilling feelings.

Atelier let the last note of the last bar of the haunted tune hang before beginning the next melody that was calming on the ears, transporting the listener to a lake or a valley, far from the busy sounds of peak-hour traffic floating very faintly from below.

Down below, amongst the busy flow of the traffic, pedestrians stopped to listen to a melody they could barely place, its calming notes working out the kinks of the day's work from between shoulder blades. They wondered at the simplistic tune and, as Atelier finished her song, could no longer remember the reason why they felt so calm and later could not place the exact moment when they had begun to feel calm.

Having finished, Atelier slipped the instrument's mouthpiece from her lips, a secret smile upon her lips, the instrument safely placed in her lap.
Just something I wrote really quickly... Originally I was going to write a story that was longer than this but it didn't fit with what I wanted so... here it is!

If you're curious the instrument is an ocarina.
